Job opening at MoveOn.org
We don't normally post job listings, but this is a big and important one -- with particular relevance to many P&T readers. So, here it is. We understand that this is THE web manager for MoveOn.org - not one of many - though it's a mid-level position supporting campaigns, not leading them.
Oh, and if you see it here - and land it: you owe us a beer!
MoveOn Web Manager and Online Organizer
Location: Flexible
Duration: Starting ASAP; no fixed end date.
Goal: Leverage technology to help MoveOn's 3.2 million members change American politics. Help us make online tools to advance a progressive agenda and take back Congress in 2006.
Description: Since 1998, MoveOn has been using technology to help Americans have a voice in our political process. We're looking for a Web Manager/"Geek" Organizer who can further that mission with intelligence, speed, and common sense. You should be a self-starter and have excellent writing and tech skills.
3 or more years of experience in web development and strong project management skills are required; political or advocacy experience is not required but is helpful. Priority will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to use technology in creative ways to accomplish social or political ends. Copy editing, SQL, and Perl skills are also a plus.
This is a fast-paced job. You'll need to be able to turn on a dime so when there's a new idea on Monday, you can test it and put it in front of 3 million people by Tuesday.
Responsibilities: Work with the Communications Director and Campaign Team to fulfill each day's urgent campaign needs, while developing tools and training materials to empower our campaigners and members.
Specific responsibilities:
- Support "hot" campaigns as needed each day.
- Keep website up-to-the-minute.
- Write, edit, and send messages to our members.
- Expand our online presence and reach.
- Edit photos for the website and email outreaches.
- Execute on-the-fly graphic design and user interface tweaks for campaigns.
- Imagine and spec new web tools to help our members make a difference and to improve our campaign management on the backend.
- Train staff, particularly campaigners, in MoveOn web-tools and basic "geek" skills, including SQL.
- Maintain internal "library", including a variety of training materials and tech/campaign documentation.
Requirements:
You must be:
- Skilled and experienced in:
- Writing for the web
- Web design, UI development, HTML and CSS
- Photo editing and basic graphic design
- Very smart, flexible, a keen problem solver, driven, and a deep believer in online democracy.
- Willing to do whatever needs to be done to make the campaign work, with a smile.
- Able to track a lot of moving parts and manage complex projects. (Maintain attention to detail, while keeping the big picture in mind.)
- Able to work very closely with other members of the team, but also to manage your work independently.
- A very strong writer.
- Creative in your use of technology to solve problems.
- Comfortable with a virtual office. Able to communicate well in conference calls, instant messaging, and email.
Not required, but bonuses:
- Copy editing skills
- Q/A testing experience
- Training experience
- Familiarity with SQL and/or Perl
- Political or advocacy experience
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience. Health & Dental insurance and a generous benefit package will be provided, plus 4 weeks paid vacation.
To Apply: Email a resume and a short writing sample as Word or PDF attachments, plus three references with phone & email, to jobs@moveon.org and include "Web Manager" in the subject line.
An ideal writing sample would be a email outreach to campaign supporters/members or website content. However, we'll accept any short (under 2 pages) piece that offers a good example of your writing skills.
MoveOn.org Political Action is an equal opportunity employer. Women, people of color, LGBTQ people and others are strongly encouraged to apply.

I am one semester away from graduating, with a degree in creative writing. I would like very much to work in a stategic division of an organization such as yours.
How do I set up for an interview, when your policy is not to post jobs?
